In Malaysia, it is generally believed that groundwater is a limited resource (much less than surface water), unreliable, polluted, difficult to extract, expensive to develop, difficult to maintain and giving negative impact to environment if developed. Collection of comprehensive groundwater data, groundwater monitoring, identification of sources of pollution, setting water quality standard, control of extraction, establishment of protected areas and enforcement of standards and regulations are still being looked into. There are advantages of groundwater over surface water resources; however, groundwater in Malaysia is often not appropriately evaluated. A more holistic approach should be designed to manage the water resources of the country. The best approach in ensuring a sustainable national water sector through the development of groundwater should be through the implementation of sound water policy and management practices.

In the other countries in the SEA region, different issues and experiences needs to be looked at and shared. This Regional ToT will enable greater awareness on the potential of groundwater for supplying the need of the SEA countries, sharing of experiences and capacity-building of groundwater management.

MyCBNet and Aguajaring had nominated the facilitators of this ToT, namely Dr Azuhan Mohamed, Dr Sia Sheau Yunn and Mr Mohd Khairul Nizar, to attend a TOT course on Groundwater Management in Pretoria in 2010. This ToT is their follow up activity.
