A groundwater training day, for over 30 Francophone African water professionals and government staff, was hosted on 28th November, by Professor Moustapha Diene of the Africa Groundwater Network (AGWNet) and Mr Julian Harbrecht and Mr Ramon Brentführer of BGR (the German Federal Institute for Geoscience and Natural Resources) – with support from BGS (the British Geological Survey).

Dr. S. Pathmarajah has been appointed as new coordinator for the Cap-Net affiliated network Cap-Net Lanka. He is succeeding Prof. Nimal Gunawardena, who headed the network for the last 2 years. Dr. Pathmarajah is a senior lecture of the Department of Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture University of Peradeniya.

Water resources management is at the very core of sustainable development, critical to the survival of people and the planet. The Sustainable Development Goal for water, SDG 6, does not only address drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, but also the quality and sustainability of water resources worldwide. To successfully meet this goal, there is a need to develop new skills for water managers at the country level. UN Environment is taking a leading role in this work, with a special focus on targets 6.3, 6.5 and 6.6, aiming at ensuring good water quality, implementing Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), and protecting water-related ecosystems, respectively.
Cap-Net’s Annual Network Managers Meeting is this year organised together with UNEP, GEMS Water, and IW:LEARN. The focus for the meeting is “Towards implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal on Water (SDG 6)”. The meeting is arranged in the UNEP facilities in Nairobi, Kenya, between 8th and 11th November.
The Selection Meeting for the Regional Master Program in IWRM 2017/18 intake was held at Birchwood Hotel in South Africa on the 8th of September 2016. All coordinators from different specialization institutions were present at the meeting. The requirements for admission included a good first degree class, relevant working experience and an approval letter from the one’s Ministry of Water.
Training workshop held in Montevideo, Uruguay, September 26-30, 2016, Spanish Cooperation Training Centre (AECID)
This workshop forms part of the Latin America Programme on International Water Law, which was started by GWP Central and South America in close cooperation with Universidad Externado de Colombia and involves partners as LA-WETnet, Cap-Net, AECID, University of Dundee, ANA Brazil and others knowledge centres in Latin America.
Round table presentation of the course “Integrated Water Resources Management” adapted for the universities of Kyrgyzstan was held on October 4, 2016, in Bishkek. The round table discussion was organized by the Central Asian Regional Water Network CAR@WAN with the support of the UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, in cooperation with Kyrgyz Department of Water Resources and Land Reclamation.
Cap-Net Lanka held the Aqua Republica educational game competition and Junior Water Award programme in-line with the Water Professionals’ Day on 01st of October at Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. “ Mr Gardener”, an innovation from a school to apply urine with an automated collection, treatment and distribution system to plants in the garden as a fertilizer was awarded the first price.
Arg Cap-Net will hold a symposium workshop on “an integrated perspective on floods” on 25th October. The workshop is in-line with the National conference on Environment and is organized together with UNICEN, UNL and UNLP.It will be held at Campus UNICEN, Tandil, Argentina
CBHydroNet, in collaboration with UNDP DRC and UNIK, is organising a training on “Flood forecasting and disaster management systems in the context of climate change” from 17-20 October in Kinshsa, DRC.
