Regional Course on IWRM and WASH
6-10 July 2009
Addis Ababa, ETHIOPIA

The course falls under the work plan of the regional capacity building network, Nile IWRM-net and is implemented with the following partners: ECWP, WSSCC/WASH Ethiopia Movement, CRDA-WSF, WaterAid Ethiopia, Water Action, Intermon Oxfam and Cap-Net. Financial support is provided under the EU Water Facility project to Cap-Net and GWP.

The traditional practice in Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) is extraction of water without conservation. This traditional practice could not bring sustainability of schemes as it is being challenged by water scarcity, conflicts in water allocation, water quality/pollution and unsustainable and non-participatory approaches. Thus, there is a need to consider the different uses of water together to ensure equitable and efficient use through Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). IWRM is a tool to address issues of equity in access, ensure safe and sustainable water supplies, secure water resources for basic human needs (abstraction with recharge), and ensure effective water governance through promoting management of schemes by communities and ensuring ownership through participatory and gender-sensitive approaches.
