Regional Short Course on
WATER POLLUTION MANAGEMENT & IWRM
July 26-30, 2010 - Jomo Kenyatta University, Nairobi

Organised by Nile IWRM net, Jomo Kenyatta University with support from UNEP-DHI centre and Cap-Net

Course Objectives
Provide both the technical knowledge and management skills necessary for planning and decision making for water pollution management in an IWRM framework
• Good understanding of the water & Environment interrelations, pollution sources and impacts
• Water quality guidelines and management approaches
• Undersigned broad (non-sectoral) context of integrated planning of land, water and soil use,leading to feasible strategies and (cost) effective protection as part of River Basin management issues and interests.
• Instruments and guidelines for planning and implementation of pollution management systems

Target Group:
Maximum of 30 participants from:
• Water and environment regulators, municipal managers or government officials with clear responsibility for water quality management, pollution control and waste water discharge regulation in the members countries
• UNEP / UNICEF African cities programme to bring in international experiences.
• Partner agencies e.g. WWF, IUCN, SIDA, GWP, DHI
• Participants from other regional networks

Venue & Organisation
The course is being organised by the Nile IWRM-Net – Nile Capacity Building network in Integrated Water Resources Management– and hosted by Jomo Kenyatta University. The course will be held at AICAD, Jomo Kenyatta University, Nairobi from 26–30th July, 2010.

Course fees for self funding participants: USD 500.
*Priority will be given to self funded participants; Limited scholarships are available.

• Policy and institutional set up for pollution management
• Water Quality Standards
• Source/ types of pollution
• Pollution permitting systems
• Strategies to protect the environment
• Monitoring systems
• Tools for polluters ( Water pollution management indicators, EMS, EIA)

Moreover the course will include:
• Case Histories from Participants
• Role Play & Exercises
• Site Visit to Nairobi treatment plant
Language of Workshop: English

Course Facilitation
Regional and international experts will facilitate the training sessions. Facilitators will come from:
• Cap-Net/ UNDP
• UNEP-DHI Centre
• Regional Experts from various member countries and partner networks
