(South East Asia Regional Network for Capacity Building in IWRM)

 

Member countries:

Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Lao, Myanmar, Philippines

Objectives:

  • To strengthen the overall human and institutional capacity of IWRM in the region
  • To stimulate regional capacity building and promote international cooperation in the field of education, training and research at all levels in IWRM
  • To promote opportunities in training and education in the region
  • To stimulate and strengthen collaborative research in the field of IWRM
  • To promote the generation of resources to support capacity building in IWRM
  • To promote sharing and dissemination of experiences of IWRM.

Outputs:

2009

  • Workshop on Information Management to support Water Management in River Basin in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, 15th - 16th January (National Programme)
  • Workshop on Hydrologic Data Management and Modeling in South East Asia in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, 20th - 24th July (Regional Programme)

2008
A selection of the activities is listed below. For more information see the annual report.

  • Lake management and conservation. A national seminar held in Cambodia in collaboration with the national Mekong River Commission and national Water Partnership.
  • Regional Workshop on Rainwater harvesting held in the Phillipines.
  • Economic and Financial instruments for IWRM course held  at Mahidol University in Thailand; A second course was held later in Indonesia.
  • Development of a roadmap for IWRM capacity building in South East Asia.
  • Regional Training in River Basin Management was held by Jasa Tirta 1 river basin organisation in Malang, Indonesia.
  • IWRM as a tool for climate change adaptation was the subject of a training in Malaysia and introduced the topic to the network and other practitioners in the region.

2007

  • Regional training on Legislation and Institutional Arrangements for IWRM held in Kuala Lumpur in collaboration with the KL Bar Council and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. 120 participants attended the conference and 23 participants attended the course.
  • Regional training course on IWRM principles and GWP ToolBox was held in Davao City, Philippines by Davao City Water District and Ateneo University, members of Phil Cap-Net. 47 participants, including 6 facilitators, participated.
  • A regional training in Capacity Building Needs Assessment was organised in collaboration with CK-Net in Indonesia. 21 participants undertook the training and then followed up the training by conducting capacity needs assessments in 6 South East Asian countries.
  • A regional Dialogue on WASH and IWRM was held at the South East Asia Water Forum in Kuala Lumpur in collaboration with STREAMS. The veent brought 26 participants together from 6 countries. The SEA Water Forum was also the venue for a feedback meeting and review of the outputs from the Capacity Building Needsd Assessment studies.
  • A regional training on Mainstreaming Gender in IWRM was held in Cambodia, Siem Reap, in collaboration with Cambo-Net, STREAMS and GWA. 36 participants from 8 countries benefited from the experience.
  • AguaJaring held two Steering Committee meetings in Kuala Lumpur in 2007.
  • Two national activities organised with AguaJaring and national capacity building networks addressed
    • IWRM principles and was held in the Philippines by Phil CapNet;
    • Institutional Framework and Legislation for IWRM held by CK-Net in Indonesia.
